Anti-truancy and Extracurricular programmes
The prospect of a city [or nation] is determined by the quality of its future leaders and there is no doubt that the children and young people of today are the leaders of tomorrow.
Oasis of Love believes that building the children is building the city. One of the major problems confronting our city and the UK in general is the attitude of young people to work; and their inability to sustain employment is another issue that has been a major cause for concern amongst employers. There is every likelihood that there is a relationship between none attendance at school and non attendance of young people at and/or poor attitude to work. It is probable that the former is the precursor of the latter.
In supplementing government efforts in its commitment to raise educational standards and improve attendance, particularly amongst vulnerable children and young people, Oasis of Love as part of its vision and commitment to community development has a number of anti-truancy and extra curriculum programmes that are envisaged to alleviate truancy problems in a number of disadvantaged areas of the city. Such programmes aim at inculcating time management, attendance culture and appropriate work ethics in the minds of Wolverhampton children and young people through coaching, encouragement, rewards and engaging them in various extracurricular activities.
Oasis of Love aims to engage and where possible recruit, both on voluntary and paid basis, parents of children and young people in this category because their involvement is crucial in achieving the desired goal. Some of the programmes will work with families for whom education has not been a main concern hence possibly achieving a dual goal of encouraging adults to imbibe a lifestyle of life-long learning, subsequently improving attendance of vulnerable young people in schools. Consequently this will help in reducing the number of young people who leave school without qualifications and skills that will enable them secure a stable future.
The various programmes and initiatives Oasisof Love has in the pipeline are aimed towards provision of opportunities for children and young people to participate in safe free-time activities and leisure with the view of encouraging regular school attendance and the development of right attitude towards work.
